The School Nurse / Health Office
Our school nurse in the Health Office carries out a variety of roles in providing
healthcare to our children. She is often the only healthcare professional that
a student will see in a non-emergency situation. With knowledge and use of community
resources, she is often the gatekeeper for entire families to a complex healthcare
system.Our nurse assists many with healthcare needs and illnesses and chronic social and emotional problems. She is a critical component to the school. Some of her duties are as follow:
- identify child abuse
- suicide risk assessment
- identify illegal drug use and depression
- inserts catheters
- gauges pacemakers and monitor blood sugar counts
- provides counseling services to teen who might be pregnant
- provides education on sexually transmitted diseases
- administers prescription medications
- screens for vision and hearing impairments
- writes referrals for health problems and behaviors
- controls communicable diseases by ensuring that students are immunized
