The Medical Magnet -- Where Success Is Our Goal!
Kennedy Gifted/Highly Gifted/High Achieving
Magnet Coordinator: Jacqueline Morrow
Kennedy’s Medical Magnet Program is designed for gifted, highly gifted, and high-achieving students with strong interests in a career in medicine. The Los Angeles area is a center for healthcare delivery and research. Our four-year program will include internships and volunteering experience. Our goal is to immerse our students in the exciting field of healthcare from the moment they step through our doors. Currently, our students are participating in volunteer opportunities at Cedars Sinai, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Kaiser Permanente, and Providence Hospitals.
New Emergency Medical Services Pathway
We are excited to announce the Kennedy's Gifted Medical Magnet has opened up a new career pathway this year with the focus on emergency medical services. This pathway will provide students the opportunity to take the following courses:
- First Responder
- Emergency Medical Services
- EMT training
Kennedy Medical Magnet is proud to be one of few selected schools worldwide to offer this rigorous and exciting pathway for our students AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program created by the College Board that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and Communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges.
AP Capstone is built on the foundation of two AP courses-- AP Seminar and AP Research-- and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study experienced in other AP courses. Our students will be able to use these skills in their in-depth studies of the areas of medicine that are of interest to them.
Once a month, Kennedy Medical Magnet students join volunteers from the Primary Care Physician Assistant Program at Keck School of Medicine of USC for the Pipeline Program. Students are introduced to a wide range of health professions while attending workshops and practicing clinical skills. Topics include neurology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, first-aid and more. Exposing the students to the opportunities in the health care field, Pipeline strives to inspire and guide them to attain their future careers.
Kennedy Gifted Magnet is partnered with Los Angeles Mission College in their California Career Pathways Trust. This is a series of four college classes taught by a college professor here on our campus. These courses focus on teaching students about different occupations in healthcare and the skills and knowledge they will need to pursue their career interests in medicine.
Our Gifted Medical Magnet students have the option of joining Kennedy’s Cal HOSA Chapter. HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a national student organization that helps to prepare future healthcare professionals by providing unique leadership development and scholarship opportunities.
Our Medical Magnet science teachers, Ms. Richard and Ms. Wilson, offer an amazing opportunity for students to participate in eight in-depth dissections after school. In the fall semester the focus is on ocean dwelling organisms and the spring semester focuses on terrestrial organisms. Check with Ms. Richard or Ms. Wilson for more information on dates and sign-ups.
